Oven racks are often the greasiest, most neglected part of any oven. Here's a practical guide to getting them clean โ whether you're tackling the job yourself or considering calling in the professionals.
Method 1: Bathtub Soak
Lay an old towel in the bathtub to protect the surface. Place the racks inside, fill with hot water, and add half a cup of washing-up liquid or a cup of biological washing powder. Leave overnight, then scrub with a non-scratch pad. This works well for moderately greasy racks.
Method 2: Bicarbonate of Soda Paste
Mix bicarbonate of soda with a little water to form a thick paste. Apply generously to the racks, leave for several hours, then scrub and rinse. This is non-toxic and works surprisingly well on light to medium grease. Spray with white vinegar before scrubbing to add a fizzing action.
What NOT to Do
- Don't use steel wool โ it scratches chrome plating and leaves fragments
- Don't put racks in the dishwasher โ it damages the finish
- Don't use caustic oven spray directly on racks without protection
- Don't forget to dry thoroughly before putting back โ rust can form quickly
